Recent Favourites

Yes I'm taking a leaf out of Zoella's book and talking about some favourites from recently. Coz what else can I do?

1. ART ANGELS album by Grimes

GUYS. If you haven't listened to Grimes' new album, you need to right now because it's incredible. I've been a fan of her's for quite a long time, and have loved her stuff - but this album is on another level. It's electronic and powerful and fantastic - if you haven't listened to her before or if you're already a fan you should definitely check it out. My fave tracks are Flesh Without Blood, Kill v Maim, Venus Fly and Easily. Also check out this sick video about her and the album.

2. East End Fashionistas + Asian Street Fashion

Recently I've been indulging in some more fashion books and collections, and I'm bloody loving it. I'm actually a huge fan of fashion and I love these kinds of books for inspiration and just general clothes porn. Check out these two great ones if it's your thing.

3. Song of Myself by Walt Whitman

Just really enjoyed this book of poems. It's my first Whitman, and I'm sure I'll be reading a lot more soon. See my full review up on my book blog.

4. Estee Lalonde

I watch a lot of youtubers. But recently I've really gotten into Estee Lalonde (previously essiebutton), even though I've been subscribed for a while. She's really funny, classy, sophisticated, smart and gorgeous and I really love watching her videos and scrolling through her blog. She's recently changed her entire image on youtube and her blog into something that is more about her entire self, and I love it. I think she's wonderful and everything she does is beautiful!

Well, that's it for now.

Hey.

Sorry it's been so long since I last posted, I just kinda forgot about the blog and wasn't motivated to put anything onto it! 2016 is the year I really want to focus on doing more reading and writing, and I want to share lots of stuff on this blog to do with all the things I love/hate. So while this isn't going to be a very active blog, it will be somewhere where I occasionally (or maybe frequently) post little things. Stick around!

:

sitting in that dodgy italian restaurant waiting for my shitty fettucini which i know will go all over my face and make her laugh. the spotted plastic tablecloth has made scratch marks up and down my leg, matching the shape ive now got from sitting cross legged for the last 2 hours. i know i know i know i should tell her i love her dresses and her knees but i know i can't because then ill never stop. she's blurring and i know i should put my glasses on and look at her but the haze of vision i can barely see her through is helping me to not break down and sob all over this shitty tablecloth. the fettucini comes and i cant even see the pieces of ham because im laughing at that joke she told me at her dads funeral last week that she just repeated to me. 10 mins. fettucini's gone and im left with a sad outline of a bowl of shitty pasta i ate with the best company i think ill ever have.

FKA TWIGS @ METRO - 4/2/15

Ok first off if you don't know who FKA is, please look her up right now. She's a fantastic solo artist and her songs all sound super angelic and spiritual and incredible. Even though we had to wait for about 35 mins for her to come on (the support when on for a bit but he was a sick DJ so it was all g), when she came on it was just incredible. She was wearing these awesome flared white pants, a black mesh top with a bralette strappy thing underneath and a killer hairstyle and she looked like she was out of this world. She sings at a really high pitch which makes me feel like I'm in church, but basically her voice is just stunning and incredibly etherial. Seeing her connect with the audience and get lost in the music was quite extraordinary - plus seeing her move and contort her body along to the music was pretty awesome. Singing along with her was amazing and one of the most special gigs ever.

LITTLE DRAGON @ OPERA HOUSE - 5/2/15

Such a funky band. Little dragon are an awesome band from Sweden and their music is quirky and fun and really great to dance to. Great atmosphere and everyone was getting their groove on - it was wicked. Their concert was so enjoyable and beautiful + there was a cute couple from Sweden next to me, so what could be better?

ONE DIRECTION @ ALLIANZ - 7/2/15

I bought tickets for this concert a year ago when I was still into 1D and was kinda reluctant to go to the concert. But it was actually really fun and I had a good time with some friends! The music was really upbeat and good to dance to and I really had a fun time. They know how to put on a good show and it was a really enjoyable night.

prompt writing 1

He should’ve been at dinner. Yeah he wasn’t dressed properly and yeah, he couldn’t force his hands off the typewriter but- he should’ve been at dinner.

The ridiculous shirt he’d thrown on that morning was in fact the only shirt he hadn’t throw out of the window of his apartment the night before, during one of his ‘weekly encounters with the phone bill.’ The shirt had in fact come from an old lover, torn and aged by the many owners it had had previously - now resting on the shoulders of a man who couldn’t bring himself to throw it out.

His hands- bruised, with fingers stained with purple, trembling to type, continued to type the tax returns of his latest client - a rather garish woman who had insisted he type instead of write the hundreds of equations she’d given him to compute. It wasn’t a job Bill particularly liked doing, but it wasn’t like he had anywhere else to work. As long as it was paying his rent, it suited him just fine.

Possibly the reason Bill had been typing the same algorithm for the past 74 minutes was because of the straining purple light from the fluorescent bar swinging above him (his mind was also preoccupied by the code above him). His notebook, a brown, tattered, lifeless thing resting underneath his wrist kept haunting him as he typed. The notebook had also been given as a gift from an old partner years ago, and over the years had been filled with Bill’s dreams - dreams that were so sinister and spooky he didn’t dare to read them after he wrote them down. But despite this inability to confront the ideas present in his nightmares, Bill chose to carry around the notebook as a sort of good-luck charm. As twisted as it seemed, Bill thought it was unusual and interesting that whenever he brought this notebook somewhere, good things happened.

It was precisely why he’d brought it today. The string of numbers peering down at him from the board above him had been written there by an unknown intruder 3 nights before. Bill, being a man who enjoyed a little adventure, had been trying to crack the code all day (it being 7pm, he had been working for approximately 9 hours on this.) He had been thinking about this code for the past 2 nights and had fixated his mind on cracking the 8 numbers that had been scribbled on the board. The number 19 on the calendar to his left wasn’t helping as it was reminding him of the dinner party he was presently missing. His ‘good clothes’ were sitting in a bag at his feet, ready to get changed into but somehow with the code in his mind and his hands whirring away, he couldn’t move.

He tried to tell himself that it was because of the deafening street noise outside that had driven him to miss the party. Maybe somehow the drone of sound crunching against his earlobes would be an excuse for missing the 200 dollar duck specially pre-ordered for the celebration?

The truth was that the slow tick of the newly installed clock was making him insane.

POWER LADIES #1: Amy Poehler

Hello again and welcome to a new segment on lotteforever I like to call ‘power ladies.’ In these posts I will be writing about powerful, determined, inspiring and badass women and why I love them/what they’ve done which has made them such top chicks. So enjoy and read on to hear more about my first power woman: Amy Poehler.

If you don’t know who Amy is, you probably haven’t laughed properly yet. She is a comedian, actress, voice artist, director, producer and writer. Best known for her work in the hit TV show Parks and Recreation as well as Saturday Night Live, and various talk shows and sketches, Amy is one of my biggest heroes. You might have seen her co-hosting the Golden Globes, as she did again this year with her partner in crime Tina Fey. Or most likely you’ve seen her play Mrs George in Mean Girls, a film written by the glorious Tina Fey.

Amy is one of the most hilarious and smart actors and comedians alive. She’s long been modestly outwitting (and being way funnier) her male counterparts, just watch an episode of Parks and Rec (6 seasons down and it only gets funnier), and you’ll see what I mean. She has worked so hard to get to where she is now - proving herself on hundreds of episodes and sketches, impressing and challenging directors and writers wherever she goes. She writes her own brilliant material and never fails to make an audience howl with laughter. She’s been doing stand up and improvisation (she co-founded the influential improv school, The Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre) for a good 20 years, and really knows what to do when it comes to comedy. She's bloody smart. She knows what makes the perfect sketch or the best scene or that one great line - and she writes like a comedic genius.

She is so hilarious it's not funny (hah). Her jokes and impressions and acting and commentary could keep me laughing for days. And the fact is, she’s not trying to prove that she’s the ‘greatest comedian’ or whatever. She’s being herself, working really hard and seeing what comes next. As a girl who loves comedy and acting myself and perhaps wants to pursue it, seeing someone like Amy pioneering the way is really important and special.

As well as being a hilarious and extremely talented actor on many TV shows and movies, she has written a hell of a lot. Many episodes she’s starred in she’s written and has even published a autobiographical type book entitled ‘Yes Please’ which explores her life as a writer, actor and comedian whilst also bringing up children. She is also an executive producer on 'Broad City,' a webshow turned tv show about 2 women in New York living and having a good time (please watch if you don’t already). Basically, she's done it all.

“Because what else are we going to do? Say no? Say no to an opportunity that may be slightly out of our comfort zone? Quiet our voice because we are worried it is not perfect? I believe great people do things before they are ready.” - Amy Poehler, 'Yes Please'

One of Amy’s biggest achievements is her work to do with promoting women’s rights and empowering young girls. Her website Amy's Smart Girlsis a hub for young women to learn and be part of a community. The show ’Smart Girls at the Party’ (the series that the website is based on) is focused on interviews with young women who are "changing the world by being themselves.” The show has it’s own Youtube channel and will develop into something huge, I’m 1000% sure.

"Girls, if boys say something that is not funny.. You don’t have to laugh."

And in her YouTube series Ask Amy, Poehler gives advice and answers questions from fans. I wouldn’t usually recommend an advise video or anything like that, but what Amy says is pure truth - coz she’s battled sexism and self-doubt and everything else so you can trust her 100%. When she gives advice it’s not in a dialogue that’s formal or structured, it’s real and it’s good. She's for pushing women to achieve their goals and to find out their passion - what a legend.

If we step back from the ‘feminist icons’ society is now selecting (e.g Taylor Swift) and look at someone like Amy who has wisely been breaking barriers in the comedy, film and tv arenas for years, it’s not hard to see who the real feminist icon really is. You know those people who just make you feel powerful whenever you read about/ hear about/ look at/ listen to them? Yeah that's Amy.

She's pretty much the coolest person I can think of and I want to be best friends like right now. Although I could never write enough about how amazing she is and all the cool stuff she's done - I just hope you're as big as a fan as I am.

She is all for self-belief and trying everything out, taking risks, being bossy and pursuing what you love + she's super gorgeous - what’s not to love about Amy Poehler?

p.s a little anecdote from Tina Fey

“Amy Poehler was new to SNL and we were all crowded into the seventeenth-floor writers’ room, waiting for the Wednesday night read-through to start. […] Amy was in the middle of some such nonsense with Seth Meyers across the table, and she did something vulgar as a joke. I can’t remember what it was exactly, except it was dirty and oud and “unladylike”,  Jimmy Fallon […] turned to her and in a faux-squeamish voice said, “Stop that! It’s not cute! I don’t like it.”
Amy dropped what she was doing, went black in the eyes for a second, and wheeled around on him. “I don’t fucking care if you like it.” Jimmy was visibly startled. Amy went right back to enjoying her ridiculous bit. With that exchange, a cosmic shift took place. Amy made it clear that she wasn’t there to be cute. She wasn’t there to play wives and girlfriends in the boys’ scenes. She was there to do what she wanted to do and she did not fucking care if you like it.” - Tina Fey, Bossypants
